Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics: A Graduate Primer on Data Visualization and Tableau® Software In-Person

Sick of pie-charts?  Want to tell more powerful stories with your data?  Attend this workshop to learn about how to better represent and communicate data.

Graduate students work extensively with data and are often expected to graphically represent the results of their research and analysis.  Visual explanations can help others understand and make decisions - but many visualizations do the opposite, confusing their audience or misrepresenting the data itself.

This two-hour workshop will offer insight into the “do’s” and “don’ts” of information design, with examples drawn from popular media.  We will also explore how the science of human visual perception can assist us in designing effective data displays. Finally, this workshop will provide participants with a hands-on introduction to Tableau®, a powerful software platform used in data visualization and analytics.

This workshop is specifically intended for graduate students from all UTM departments and programs and will use some sample data for the hands-on portion of this workshop.  No previous design experience is required but some experience working with data and/or Excel is recommended.

Please bring a pair of headphones as part of the workshop will involve an online tutorial that requires these.
